About Me

Nina Beaty is a Licensed Creative Arts Therapist in New York. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film Animation from New York University and received a Master’s of Art in Art Therapy from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Throughout her career, Nina has shown adults with medical challenges such as cancer, diabetes or HIV/AIDS, how they can express themselves through art.
Since her small cell lung cancer diagnosis in 2014, Nina has become a vocal patient ambassador to support the lung cancer community. She has shared her story in many ways, in print for Cure Magazine and AARP Bulletin and has been a keynote speaker at lung cancer conferences in NY, San Diego and Washington, DC.
Her videos range from short PSA’s that remind the public that our lungs give breath to our lives to lengthier ones that show how she used artmaking, including animation to cope with the stress and uncertainty of living with lung cancer
In 2017, Nina created 18 animated emojis that cancer patients can use to stay in touch with their friends and family. These emojis are free for anyone to download from the iTunes App. Click here

The Empat Project

As an artist and art therapist who has survived small cell lung cancer thanks to being in an revolutionary immunological clinical trial, Nina began The EmPat project.

During the early stages of treatment, Nina found it difficult to keep up with the many messages and texts that came in from her friends and family. Too emotionally and physically drained, she wanted a shorthand way to stay in touch by using emojis, but found the popular emojis were not adequate for expressing something as serious cancer. This is what led Nina to create 18 EmPat emojis that would express key features of the cancer experience in a mature, sensitive fashion. She is now expanding this project so that more people in the cancer community and beyond can be aware of the usefulness of her “cancer emojis” to help them stay in touch during such difficult times.
